3 Simple Steps to Better Writing

1. Write everything down
It's next to impossible to create and edit at the same time. When you start writing don't edit and don't read it until you are finished. You'll be tempted to make changes. Resist the temptation! When you've finished, put your work away for a couple of days.

2. Edit your work
Now you get to become the editor! Read through your work and mark the parts you want to change or revise. Make your revisions and read it again. Focus in on specific passages, sentences, or paragraphs that you want to shape up. When you finish editing read the entire piece out loud.

3. Listen to how it sounds
If you read out loud you'll be more likely to catch missing words and spelling mistakes. It will also allow you to catch places where perhaps a word can be changed, or a sentence can be reworked so that it flows better. Make additional revisions and read it again out loud. If time permits, put your work away for another day or two, then read it again. It's a good idea to give yourself some distance from the work, so that when you read it again you'll be less likely to fill in words or meanings that aren't there. You'll be able to see the work as though you were reading it for the first time.
Use these steps with all of your written work and you'll be on your way to better writing!
